PLINTHS
A range cooker requires a level and non combustible base on which to stand.
You may wish to build a plinth to raise the height of the cooker to suit work top height. The height of the cooker without a plinth is 851mm.
What is required?
A range requires a flat, solid, non combustible base, capable of supporting its weight which is typically

How thick does the plinth need to be?
|
Required base thickness |
Electric, Gas, Oil |
12mm |
Although this is the minimum required, such a thin section of material would rarely be able to carry the weight without cracking.
It is not essential that a range cooker stands on a raised plinth, providing the above conditions are met. However, the thickness of any plinth will usually be determined by the need to match the working height of the cooker to adjacent work surfaces.
If the floor is suspended, it may require additional support underneath the base area. The assistance of a builder or structural engineer should be sought.
Wood cladding, linoleum or plastic tiles must be removed from the area of the base of the cooker.
What size plinth do I need?
The dimensions of a hearth or plinth should be the same as the cooker base plate:-

An overlap of 10mm maximum is allowed along the front edge, but there must be no overhang to the rear or on the left or right hand sides. It is absolutely essential that the finished hearth is level in all directions, as only very minor shimming of the range cooker base plate is permitted, up to a maximum of 8mm.
When wall tiles are to be fitted on the rear wall, these must go down behind the range cooker and not finish onto the top plate. Allow extra depth to the 679mm dimension to compensate.
Any skirting board on the rear should be removed.
We also supply metal plinths for all models at various heights to suit adjacent kitchen units.
